Tire size limitations on rims/wheels?
I currently have a 2001 VW Jetta GLS.
I have stock 15" steel rims/wheels. Can I take the stock tires from those 15" rims and mount them on 16" or 17" rims without any additional modification, i.e. adapters?
What would be the disadvantages for choosing 16/17" instead of stock 15"?
Is there anything else I need to be aware of when buying new rims?

you need to get new rims and new tires
and they both need to be 17 inch or both need to be 16 inch.
they have to be the same (rim and tire)
it could rub When You turn real sharp turns,
other than that, your underbody panel will start to wear out slightly from the rubbing, but thats not too bad
your speedometer, will also lose a Little Bit of accuracy
