Microphones.............?
I would say I'm a little new to the whole singing business, I am a guitarist but for singing and recording purposes I will need a mic.
1. I am going to need to be heard, so do I need an amp, preamp?
2. What type of microphone should I get that will work for recording as well as band practices

The Shure SM58 or SM57 mics are a good place to start... Sennheiser and Audio Technical make good mics, too.
These mics use XLR cables to plug into a mixing board.
The mixing board can plug into an amplifier (and Equalizer and compressor and audio effects) and the amplifier plugs into speakers... or the mixer can plug into powered speakers...
Mackie makes good boards. Hafler, Crown and several others make good amps if you go thsat route. Mackie makes good powered speakers, too.
You will also want mic stands - maybe one with a boom.
It would be more helpful if we knoew what kind of music.
Studio mics and mics used for live gigs have different requirements... but the SM58s are good all-around mics...
