How do you think horses view 'treats'?
Dogs and cats are brought food by their mothers and pack members so learn to see others as superior by their food providing skills. Horses NEVER give food to each other, they may share but they have no concept of giving food as they are always surrounded by it. So how do they see it when we give them food? I think they see it as taking from us as they would take from an inferior horse. None of my horses takes any interest in a bucket of food until I put it on the floor and walk away - they see it as mine while I have it. I've seen other peoples horses barge them for the food and bite for treats. What do you think of my theory? I never give treats. I never have any problem catching my horses, although some were difficult to catch when I got them.
i think if that works for you thats great. i think horses learn to seperate humans from other horses by our ability to share with them. we ask them for their cooperation we don't get confrontational unless they pick a fight with us and thats somehing new to them. i think your horses see you as a dominant member of their herd. just like the higher ranking lions get firstpick at food so do you. while you have something it's yours and if they try and get it they'll regret it. thats an excellent relationship to have if you can establish it. i prefer being equal with them unless they try to bully me. then im the dominant one and they better back off because i won't play games. but as long as they treat me as equal as well they are fine. i always have treats with me but if they try and grab for them i stand my ground and show that i am indeed in charge. if they don't grab for the treats and they do something that deserves a treat they get it. most of teh time when i go out into a the pastures i take a few apples with me to share and i actually do share them. i eat a few bites and slices and i give them some as well. it's just my way of saying 'hey, thanks for carrying me around on your back all the time.' and showing thta i want be friends. i don't mind being pushed around a little but i draw a firm line when it goes to far. none of my horses would dare try to bully me. they know it wouldn't work. but i still do things like introduce myself by blowing gently on their nose to teach them my scent and sharing apples and carrots with them. maybe im weird but i enjoy an equal bond with them. it's easier to me to get them to cooperate if i ask nicely. just like with kids. if your bossy or mean they cause more trouble. if i ask and say please then it's just more pleasant all the way around. my horses respect e for being a firm but fair member of their herd.
