What fret for key of F with a capo?
I need to play a song in the key of F, but the original song is in the key of G. What fret would I put a capo on to change the key from G to F?
Cody, you need to learn how to "transpose." First, to answer your question: If you want to still play the G formation chords but drop it two frets to F....you have no choice but to put the capo on the 10th fret. (Think of the 12th fret as the octave of the open strings and drop 2 frets)
A better way would be to transpose it to the key of F and forget the capo. To transpose, from G to F you take every chord and drop it two frets. So all your G chords become F, your C chords become Bb, all your D chords become C, etc. Do you understand how I arrive at 2 frets? Look at any string...your low E is the easiest example. Examine the notes on that string...learn them. E-F-F#(Gb)-G-G#(Ab)-A-A#(Bb)-B-C-C#(Db)-D-D#(Eb)-E Find the note representing the key you are in, then count how many frets up or down to get to the key you want to transpose to.
Ok, so maybe you can't play barre chords and that's why you want to use the capo? In this case, you can still transpose.....to a key that will work better with the capo. The problem with G to F is that it is going lower. Since a capo is best used for *raising* keys, you need to transpose to a lower key that you can play in...then raise it with the capo.
If you transpose the song to D, you could raise the key to F by putting the capo on the 3rd fret. To transpose from G to D, drop all your chords 5 frets. G-->D C-->G D-->A
It may sound confusing, but it's really just simple counting. If you learn how to transpose, your life will become much easier.
