What is the difference between electroless nickel plating per MIL-C-26074E to Nickel Plating per QQ-N-290A?
This plating will be followed by Silver Plating per QQ-S-365. Which one is better? this plating will be used on aircraft connectors.(pin or socket contacts).
Nickel
[QQ-N-290A]
There is a nickel finish for almost any requirement. Nickel can be deposited soft or hard, dull to bright. The difference is dependent on process used and conditions employed in plating.
The hardness can range from 150 - 500 Vickers. Can range in appearance from matte, light gray (almost white) to a condition resembling stainless steel. Corrosion resistance is a function of thickness. Has a low coefficient of thermal expansion. Nickel plating is magnetic.
All steel parts having a hardness of Rc 40 or greater require a post bake at 375°F ± 25 for 3 hours minimum. Note: All steel parts having a tensile strength of 220,000 or greater shall not be nickel plated without specific approval of procuring agency.
Class 1: For corrosion protection. Plating shall be applied over an underplating of copper or yellow brass on zinc and zinc based alloys.
In no case shall the copper underplate be substituted for any part of the specified nickel thickness.
Class 2: For engineering applications.
Grade A : .0016" minimum thickness
Grade B: .0012" minimum thickness
Grade C: .0010" minimum thickness
Grade D: .0008" minimum thickness
Grade E: .0006" minimum thickness
Grade F: .0004" minimum thickness
Grade G: .0002" minimum thickness
Electroless plating:
Electroless nickel (EN) plating is a chemical reduction process which depends upon the catalytic reduction process of nickel ions in an aqueous solution (containing a chemical reducing agent) and the subsequent deposition of nickel metal without the use of electrical energy. Due to its exceptional corrosion resistance and high hardness, the process finds wide application on items such as valves, pump parts etc., to enhance the life of components exposed to severe conditions of service ,particularly in the oil field and marine sector. With correct pretreatment sequence and accurate process control , good adhesion and excellent service performance can be obtained from EN deposited on a multitude of metallic and non-metallic substra6tes.
In the EN plating process, the driving force for the reduction of nickel metal ions and their deposition is supplied by a chemical reducing agent in solution. This driving potential is essentially constant at all points of the surface of the component, provided the agitation is sufficient to ensure a uniform concentration of metal ions and reducing agents. Electroless deposits are therefore very uniform in thickness all over the part's shape and size. This process offers distinct advantages when plating irregularly shaped objects, holes, recesses, internal surfaces, valves or threaded parts.

MIL-C-26074E
Use when hard and smooth surfaces are required on coated parts. Excellent uniform deposits are produced on irregular parts, such as used in air compressors, missile fuel injector plates, pumps, reciprocating surfaces, etc., are protected from oxidation, corrosion and wear. With aluminum electronic devices, not only is product contamination prevented, but the coated parts of stainless steel similarly facilitate brazing.
Hydrogen embrittlement relief bake. Within 4 hours after coating, coated Class 1 and 2 steel parts which have a hardness of RC 40 or above shall require a bake at 375°C ±25°F for not less than 3 hours.
Heat treatments. Class 2 hardness coatings. Shall have a minimum hardness of 800 Knoop or equivalently. The hardness can be achieved by heating the part per schedule given in the specification.
Class 3 hardness coatings. Coated nonheat-treatable aluminum parts shall be heated for 1 to 1-1/2 hours at 375°F±15°F (191°C±8°C) to improve adhesion of nickel.
Class 4 coatings. Coated heat-treatable aluminum alloys shall be heated between 240°C to 260°F (116°C to 127°C) for 1 to 1-1/2 hours to improve adhesion of nickel.
Stress relief heat treatment. Coating all parts of RC 40 or above, which have been machined, ground or surface hardened (includes cold worked but not shot peened surfaces), shall be given a stress-relief heat treatments at a temperature that will produce maximum stress relief without reducing hardness to less than specified minimum.
Shot peening. All steel parts of RC40 or above used in fatigue applications and/or subject to stress or corrosion shall be shot peened in accordance with ML-S-13165.
