A 0.01-kg bullet traveling horizontally at 400.2 m/s strikes a 4.2-kg block of wood sitting at the edge of a table. The bullet is lodged into the wood. If the table height is 1.3 m, how far from the table does the block hit the floor?
1. Find the horizontal speed of the block and bullet
m1v1 (initial) + m2v2 (initial) = m1v1 (final) + m2v2 (final)
(0.01)(400.2) + (4.2)(0) = (0.01 + 4.2) v'
v' = 0.95 m/s
*note: because the bullet is stuck in the wood, their velocity is the same.
2. Find the time the block and bullet land on the floor
d = vt + 1/2 at^2
1.3 = (0)t + (1/2)(9.8) t^2
t = 0.52s
3. Find the distance
d = vt = (0.95)(0.52) = 0.49m
