Why is King Ludwig II of Bavaria known for being eccentric?
I know about his fantasy castles and how he spent lots of money to build them...but I don't see how that gives him the everlasting reputation of a madman.
If I remember correctly, he had symptoms of schizophrenia, with hallucinations and erratic behavior.
Much of his family was mentally ill, with signs of what might have been tourettes, suicides, and many asylum trips. (This is all probably connected to inbreeding - Queen Victoria was a relative, and it shows in her lineage a bit, also.)
He was almost certainly gay, and that was used against him by others in the government with testimony from former lovers. Members of his staff testified that he would be quiet and brooding much of the time, but then he would talk out loud when there was no one there, and order placesettings for multiple people when he was eating alone.
After powers of regent were taken away from him due to his actions he killed himself, taking his psychiatrist with him.
