Learning an instrument from scratch: self taught vs. lessons?
For someone in his mid-20s who has never learned an instrument before, what would be the best course of action for learning how to play music? If self-taught, would you recommend a certain method?
I have a bass guitar but I am also interested in learning to play other instruments such as drums, accordion, mandolin, etc.
Also, are music theory courses beneficial to learning an instrument, or should these courses be taken after one has become proficient enough in playing an instrument?
If you plan on playing the accordion, it is best to take at least a dozen or so lessons to get you started out with the correct physical technique. You don't want to learn bad habits that will impede your progress or cause you physical pain. The same applies to almost every instrument to some degree. This applies to music theory as well (only for your brain). I would suggest you get a book like "Music theory for Dummies" to familiarize yourself with the basics. Then as you progress you can study the theory that applies to your music tastes. Theory and technique go hand in hand and are best learned together. There is a plethora of theory stuff available on the web for almost every instrument. If accordion is your thing, check for a local accordion club or read the archives of one of the Yahoo accordion groups. You can obtain lots of information for free this way.
