Whats the most brutal, extreme, mega powerful, guitar distortion pedal?
I have heard the boss metal core is quite good , but have also heard its almost to over the top. Is there a good alternative?
Well, what are you looking for - something that has tons of distortion, or something that is distorted but sounds good?
There is a huge difference between "hey this distortion pedal has, like, 80 db of gain!" and "hey, how did you get your guitar to sound so crushingly sick?"
I have used both the Metal Zone and the Metal Core. Used the Metal Zone for years, actually, but recently started using the Metalcore for everything but recording - the MZ has less bass response, which makes it really good for recording.
If you want a sick heavy guitar tone, you have to look at all of the elements of your signal chain - not just the distortion pedal. The amp and speaker are more important - with the right amp you don't need a distortion pedal, and with the right speaker or cab you'll get that full, chunky tone you're looking for. High output pickups really help, too... they don't have to be active, but for me I've found that I prefer to have passive pickups with an onboard preamp in my guitar - its a good compromise.
I do like the metalcore a lot (otherwise I wouldn't use it). I've found that one of the key elements in getting the high-gain tone you want is EQ, though - especially after the distortion, but before as well.
Take Dimebag Darrell for instance... he put an EQ pedal both before and after his distortion pedal (10 band MXR EQ pedals both). The first one boosted mids to increase saturation and distortion, the second one cut mids to get that "scooped metal" sound back.
I do like the Metalcore... turn the gain all the way down and I get a much more ... I dunno, almost bluesy swampy distortion. I also don't see the point of turning the gain up past half-way, though... but maybe that's because I have high output pickups? I never have to turn the gain up past 75% on any distortion device....
