What brand of mallets is best?
I'm going to college and a percussion major requires a list of a mallets that you have to buy. I can't decide where to buy my mallets from. I know Mike Balter is nice, but Pro-Mark is more expensive, so that made me think it might be a little better...Yet I've always been partial to Vic Firth. I need suggestions!
They are demanding what brand of mallets to buy? That seems odd.
As to your question, the best brand of mallets are the ones that are most comfortable for you to use. This isn't a matter of brand name "labeling" or cost. Balter, Pro-Mark, Calato, Firth.....are all good in their own right. Some have varieties and weight of head compositions that the others don't have. So you might like the balance and "feel" of one variety of Firth mallets for one type of playing, while liking the balance and feel of a Balter or Pro-Mark set for another.
Want to know the most comfortable set of (marimba) mallets I ever had? They were HAND MADE by Dr. Johnny Lane - former Dean of the Percussion department at Eastern Illinois University. I was taking private lessons from him at the time and he gave me a set of 4. They were ".....Like butter....!!!" I still have them!!
