What is the difference between Lead and Rhythm guitar?
My friends and I are starting a band. And my friend Stephen and I both Play Guitar. He said he would be Lead Guitar and I could be rhythm guitar. What's the difference?
Lead gutar plays the prominent Guitar Parts in the song (e.g. the riff that stands out the most when just casually listening). This is usually the guitar that plays the more complex and intricate passages such as Guitar Solos. the rhythm guitar can be heard "underneath" or "behind" the lead guitar, usually playing chords or smple riffs along with the lead guitar, serving almost like a backbone for the lead.
Both are not always necessary. For example, Most of Van Halen's earlier albums contain only one lead guitar throughout (in order to give a more Live Concert sound, as they only had one guitarist). Many bands, however (such as AC/DC and Guns N' Roses) have both. This gives the music a much fuller sound and reduces awkward no-chord-silences.
Oftentimes a band will have both guitarists playing leads and harmonizing, such as Avenged Sevenfold. So there doesn't always need to be one concrete lead player and one rhythm player... You Can be creative and trade off from time to time if you'd like.
