Which is the best 9v ac adapter?
I have a lot of pedals and I'm tired of using 9v batteries so i buy a gator G-BUS 8-US power supply. But when I use it it makes a lot of hum, so I was wondering if someone knows a which is the best ac adapter or power supply for stomp boxes, I only have 9v stomp boxes so it wouldn't be so hard to find it.
OK. Did a little reading and other people report the same problem, evidently because your units outputs are not powered independently (discretely). There is probably nothing to do except step up to the plate and buy a unit like the Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2 Plus. It sells for $169.00 and is considered the "standard". While others report hum in your unit, there are a couple of things to try.
Make sure the power in the house/studio is properly grounded and the polarity is correct. You can get a pocket-tester at home depot for around $10.00. They are good for gigs as well. I've gotten a full
120 volts thru a PA and a light rain. I'm glad Shure mics are tough! A proper ground may have prevented my death! So.....Remember Great White? They paid for sloppy stagehands!
Another thing...turn off any fluorescent lights. They cause hum sometimes. Unplug anything on that circuit you aren't using. Try another outlet...the ground plug in it could be faulty. And make sure you don't lose the power cord that came with your power supply...evidently they are impossible to find!
Try moving the power supply to different spots around your amp....plug it into a different circuit than the amplifier/recorder/PA. Got any copper foil? You could shield the cable going from the wall to the power supply but that is kind of extreme. Basically look for anything that could give off stray RF interference. A bad light bulb could be the problem! The newer coiled bulbs that replace incandescent lamps are a prime source of RF noise. An AM radio tuned to static is a crude RF finder. If the radio sound changes sound,crackles, hums, etc. the device next to it is spewing out RF noise. Crude but cheap!
I'd sell the G-bus on Ebay with a $50.00 reserve, then order the Voodoo Lab Pedal Power Supply for $169.00 from a dealer like Musician's friend or Sam Ashe (both have the same price, I think...) and you'll have a friend for years! It is quiet, has independent, discrete outputs.You know how it is with music....it takes money and spending a little more to get the better item is usually the way to go. But I'm crazy...I've bought 12 guitars in the last year...now, if I can play them all at once...
If you can't fix the problem by the methods above, buy the Voodoo supply. It's like an American strat, you can hear the difference compared to a mexican and feel it. I say get the Voodoo, it seems to be the "industry standard"
