Symphonic French
Im new to Tenor Sax, any pointers?
Ive been playing clarinet for 5 years (in symphonic band), and french horn (marching band -mellophone-) for almost 2 yrs. I was recently asked to move to Tenor sax for Jazz Band. My high school is known for its prestigious band program and we always get at least 10 million dollars in scholarship money every year. So i have a lot to live up to since we've had a lot of good tenor saxophone players. So i was hoping someone could give me some embouchure, playing techniques, or mouthpiece suggestions or just anything of that nature would be great =-)
Different from clarinet:
Take more mouthpiece - if the low notes are a problem, you don't have enough
Use a looser embouchure - if the low notes are a problem, you are too tight
Use much more air but not as much air pressure
The mouthpiece needs to match the music style - jazz needs a more open mouthpiece and concert band needs a closer one although a mid-opening may be used for both.
Fingerings are a bit confusing at first because the both registers are the same fingering, eg. low G and high G are the same with the octave key for the high G etc.
Good luck. It is good tor your future to learn a second language and a second instrument!
